The Abeyance

Many worlds bear scars of the War: smoldering cities, polluted skies, and fields of dead metal that stretch beyond sight. As survivors and travelers behold these desolate places, rumors of strange forces begin to spread: a mauve miasma that glistens in the moonlight; a dissonant chorus of creaking metal; empty battlefields, abandoned even by the dead. Those that see the War through spreadsheets and dossiers chalk these rumors up to weak-willed soldiers, the necessary reconciliations of those that have seen too much of the endless conflict. Those on the front lines, however, know to sleep with one eye open when metal creaks on a windless night...
